Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard Retail Install Boot-132 Method

This guide only covers up to 10.6.1 Please do not update past that unless you know how to proceed.

Alright, I know a lot of you have been waiting for this so here it is.

Alright to start off with I have made two boot-132 cd’s.

BootSLv3.iso: Contains all of the Extra’s you need to make a quick install

Download BootSLv3-wifi.iso

BootSLv3-nowifi.iso: This is for those of you with the “Still Waiting for Root Device” problem.

Download BootSLv3-nowifi.iso

BootSLv3-NoExtra.iso: Doesn’t have any Extras and will only be able to boot you into the install disk.

Download BootSLv3-noextra.iso

Let’s get started

Step 1: Make sure you have your copy of Snow Leopard (I would highly suggest purchasing it, it’s a great price for what it offers!)

Step 2: Download BootSL.iso and burn it to a CD.

Step 3: Put the burned boot cd into your cd-drive and on startup at the “DELL” splash screen press “F12″ now you will be at the boot selection menu, from here wait till your activity light on your cd-drive stops blinking and boot from the disk.

Step 4: Eject the boot-132 disk and replace it with your Snow Leopard Disk and again, wait till the activity light stops blinking. Once it’s stopped press “F5″ and the Install Disk will appear. Boot the disk with the boot flags “-v -x” you do this by simply typing -v -x. If you see it at the bottom left corner then you did it right, just hit enter. The disk will take about 5-10 min to load.

Step 5: Once in the install disk go to “Tools” from the menu bar and choose “Disk Utility.” Once you’ve gotten into the Disk Utility you have to select your hard drive and click on the partition tab and under the Volume Scheme choose 1 Partition and click “Options” and choose GPT. From this tab choose “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” and name it Macintosh HD and click apply.

Step 6: Close Disk Utility and go through the Installer. After it is done restart and again press “F12″ and boot from the Boot-132 disk, this time select the Macintosh HD partition and again boot with the “-v -x” boot flags.

Step 7: Now that you’ve booted into your partition open your disk and open the “Post-Install” folder and install “Chameleon 2 RC3″ After this go back to the Post-Install folder and open the Extra folder now highlight and copy everything in the Extra folder. After you have copied all the files open up your “Macintosh HD” and go to the “Extra” folder and paste everything you copied.

Step 8: Now Open up the Applications folder from the Post-Install folder and open “Kext Helper” now go to “Local Extensions” and Kext Helper all the files in there.

Step 9: Go to the PrefPanes Folder and look below for the Terminal Commands that you need to run to install the trackpad preference pane. After that just double click the VoodooHDA prefpane. (Terminal is located inside the Utilities folder that is in the Applications folder.)

Step 10: Open up the Sleep folder and double click the SleepWatcher.dmg and install both packages. After this open the “Install rc.wakeup” and run the commands in terminal. Now quit terminal and open it again and run

“sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0

“sudo rm /private/var/vm/sleepimage”

Step 11: Restart and you will have everything running. You should go to the VoodooHDA prefpane in system preferences and adjust the “Speaker” volume and the #5 Microphone for the mic. After this you can go to the sound prefpane and select the speaker as your output.

Step 12: Go to Software update and update to 10.6.1 and you’re good to go all updated. Please post a comment if this guide worked for you.

Step 13: If this guide helped feel free to return the favor and donate anything you can.

Hey man, I never used any vulgar language nor did I comment on the quality of anybody’s site. Thomas and I have a previous issue from his site that he decided to bring here. I was simply telling him to get lost. he has his own site and has no business here. I don’t know who henk is or why he felt the need to comment to me about the quality of this site. I can only assume that henk is either a pen-name for thomas or is one of his little HS buddies that just wanted an excuse to advertise his site here.

  4. I am truly astonished at the claims made here, and am appalled that Genaro would let the leadership of this site fall to someone as tempered and unhelpful as FreeBurma.

I originally came here looking to come together on a foolproof method for installing OS X, and was immediately spoken down to by FreeBurma when he misunderstood what I was trying to say. Then, MilkyTech decided to bring up old issues (which, unlike he claims, he brought here by posting that first comment) and tried to start problems here.

@FreeBurma- You may mean well, but don’t be so stubborn and short tempered towards users with questions, no matter how obvious the answer. I was shocked by your treatment of Lohens when he asked about adding the Kernel Flag for pmVersion, and your response of “NO.”

@MilkyTech- I forbid your from commenting on my site for being impatient and demanding answers. Grow up and get over it. Holding a grudge and pouting about it months later won’t get you anywhere.

@Lohens- My issue with you may have been an overreaction on my part, though a quick link back to the original guide would have been nice as the exact instructions were copied word for word. You do claim that your original comment did not come through since it had the link, so I’m willing to move on from that.

As for this Henk business- I don’t know Henk, I am not Henk, and I don’t necessaryily agree with Henk’s method of sharing his opinion. Nevertheless, they’re his own and so he is entitled to them.

There’s not really much more for me to say except that I’m astonished over what was been said here over the past couple of days. I don’t understand why people must cause drama in every aspect of life, going as far as doing so on a site about running Mac OS X on the Inspiron 1525. I will be removing this RSS feed so that I no longer have to bare to see this constant bashing over silly, nonsensical things. Best of luck to all.

I think if you use a newer version of VoodooHDA you’ll be OK. I’m using v.0.2.61 now, and there is a newer 0.2.62, and perhaps even newer? There is also a small helper application called Voodoo HDA Helper that you can install as a login item in your System Preferences>Accounts that will reset your VoodooHDA System Preferences settings each time you boot so that you won’t have to manually readjust them each time. Once you have both this newer version of VoodooHDA and also Voodoo HDA Helper you should be OK?

As for the Voodoo preference pane crashing, I think they all say version 1.0, but there are separate Leopard, Snow Leopard, and 64bit versions I think, so if you’re having crash problems after getting a current version of VoodooHDA.kext, you may possibly have the wrong version of the Preference Pane?

The latest development of VoodooHDA is happening over at projectosx.com and you can find downloads for v.0.2.62 or newer there.

I did go through that tutorial. And might I add, dailyblogged is the reason I have Leopard right now. But the guide says I cannot install on the partition am already booted in. The main problem is I don’t have extra space to create a new partition.

Am thinking of using the USB method, i,e I will make the USB bootable and use that to install on my Leopard partition. This way, I will still have my current Leopard OS to modify whatever files I would to prep the USB. Would that work? :(

there is a chance you will get support here, it does however apear you may have limited knowledge and may find this all to be quite an ordeal. I hope you persevere, you should find all the info here and in othe forums to get the outcome yourafter.

If you follow the outcome exactly as above, then use the new sleepenabler.kext instead of the one on the bootslv disk that should be fine.

Load it from a usb or a cd or whatever means you can think of – (i downloaded it from safemode) if you have the ability to replace the sleep enabler on the cd, do so. Just be sure you use the right version of the kext otherwise your instal wont work.

puttin it on a memory stick doesn’t make a difference because without out it my 1525 freezes between stages 4 and 5 and with the memory stick the same thing happens. i boot with flags -v-x the white screen with the apple logo and the swerl underneath appears then it reboots but the screen doesnt come back on until you hit the power button and then this causes a grey screen with and mac os curser to appear in the top left corner of the screen this cannot be moved using the trackpad.

@frog: VoodooHDA or Native AppleHDA solutions have both been covered here multiple times. You should look back through all the comments before asking questions that have been already answered. Noticed you have been over on Thomas’s site (dailyblogged). Did you miss the part over there about using native AppleHDA audio?

For VoodooHDA, if that is what you want to use, look here: http://www.projectosx.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=355

Once you have installed the latest AppleHDA or VoodooHDA you can remove sleepwatcher, if you have it installed. Look at this; http://iphonetool.blogspot.com/2009/02/uninstall-sleepwatcher.html

Wondering what sleepwatcher has to do with audio? It unloads and reloads the VoodooHDA extension to get sound back after a system sleep. This was a problem with the, now very very old, version included in the install cd.

Both of these links were located in less than ONE MINUTE by doing a google search!!!

As a general rule: a Hackintosh requires a certain amount of skill and knowledge and the willingness to search for and find solutions for the problems you WILL run into (like updating the extension cache in /Extra. The guide here is almost a year old, a search for updates and improvements should have been the FIRST thing you did.

First of all… Thank you! this works almost magically… the only problems I found are related with the folders (sleep changed to Sound Fix) and the Kext Helper… after Kexting the files my systems halts and nothing works, so the third time I skip step 8 and it works! no sound but everything else is working!!! It will be nice to know what each kext does but I think I can figure out with some time… hopefully!

Now my BIG problem is installing vista… I Installed Leopard, upgrade to 10.6.4 (from retail .3) and everything great… but I need vista so after getting frustrated because my full backup didn’t work I made a full installation and THEN I lost Leopard! I tried to recover it from time machine but it says that the backup is from another computer (?) so after trying every single combination I could imagine I finished erasing everything and reinstalling Leopard… so my question is…

What is the proved procedure/order to install Snow Leopard and Vista?
Does anybody knows whats happening with the time machine? different computer???

@The SWolf: Time machine doesn’t work as far I as know. :(

    I did that this way.
Make 2 partitions with OS X install disc.
One for OS X one for Win. Extended (journaled) and DOS format.
Install Win on DOS formated partition (format it to ntfs).
After Win installed install SL on ext.(journ.) partition.
When you install everything on startup you should see chameleon startup screen where you can choose what OS you wanna start.
You can do this in reverse order, first Win than SL, but in that case Win will “ignore” presence of another OS on HDD and will start Win automatically, than you’ll need to change some of registry and God knows what else to make Win give you dual boot. So… ;)

PSYou should have sound if you install VoodooHDA.

If you want your hackintosh to work just do this.
For more performances search older posts (not too old). And when you learn what kext do what you can “play” with them and make your hackintosh work with less kexts and more performance.

I wrote in post above what kexts I use now on my 1525. Only 2 in E/E and 4 in S/L/E.

@C0r130n3, Thank you for your answer! :) I tried to follow you but got confused with the sequence:

…Install Win on DOS formated partition (format it to ntfs).
After Win installed install SL on ext.(journ.) partition…

    and then you said:

You can do this in reverse order, first Win than SL…
What is the one that worked for you? I want to see the chameleon every time I turn on my Dell! :D

I tried 1st SL and then vista but had the vista ruining the Leopard… I got to the log in message but none keyboard responded! Not the external neither the laptop keyboard, I re-installed the SL and never passed from the log-in message(same problem).

About the time Machine, I found in another forum that you can use time machine even from another computer by pressing alt (in PC, opt in mac) and clicking on time machine, it seems to work because I could detect my previous backups!

I did not install the kext because the two times I did it I ended with terminal text on my desktop, a halted computer ant the nanoseconds message as last line; so I am waiting to understand how they work and have the time to try one by one to detect the problem.

Mi concern about the time machine was because I upgrade form 6.3 to 6.4 before installing vista… 200MB installation that may finish in the trash can, but hopefully that will not be the case; and I do not want to be upgrading every time I check the kext to find the bad one.

P.S. I did the installation without the kext files, lucky me! :D

@yadinx: 1. Go in SAFE MODE
    2. Remove all additional kext that you installed earlier in S/L/E. Just drag&drop them in Trash. (You can also remove AppleHDA.kext cause I have problem with sound when I install VoodooHDA)
2b. Use Kext Utility just in case. ;)
    3. Delete content of your Extra folder on root directory.
    4. Copy content from Extra.zip > Extra to your Extra folder on root directory.
    5. Use Kext Helper for Kexts in S/L/E that I upload.
    6. Use Kext Utility.
    7. Use Disk Utility to reapir disk permissions on Macintosh HD. (just in case)
    8. When finished, restart.
    9. If you succeed, you can install VoodooHDAPrefpane, also provided in second link. Install VoodooHDAPrefpane, and that’s all.

I hope that I don’t need to say that this is for Dell 1525! :D (1280×800)
Hope this will do the job for you. ;)

    Here’s the links for files…

    1. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=5CEA44QQ
    2. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=MJS99VB4 (From here use ONLY VoodooHDAPrefPane)

PS BACKUP YOUR KEXTS! You do this on your own… bla, bla, bla… ;)

    Good Luck!

@The SWolf: Are you talking about Dell 1525? If that’s right than I can try to help you.
Just like i wrote. First Format HDD with Retail SL DVD, than install of Win, after that install of SL, And that’s all. After that you should see Chameleon every time you start up your Dell. ;) And it was mistake that I wrote reverse order, sorry… :D reverse would be First SL than Win… and than you can continue reading that post. :D
(When you have to install Win on DOS formated partition, choose that partition, format it to ntfs, and continue installation. Confused now? :) )
So, making partitions and formatting with SL, than format of DOS partition to ntfs with Win install DVD, install of Win, than install of SL on extended (journaled) partition.

You install without kexts??? Are you kidding me? :) That is a reason why you can’t use your keyboard and USB,… Follow instructions from this fantastic guide, (also you can find my old post with kexts and a little bit changed guide (just some terminal typing changes)) when you install and update to 10.6.4 do what i write to yadinx 2 posts above. :)

Really, I don’t use Time machine, so I can’t help you with that. :(

I am only getting to step 4 when this happens, I never get to the install part. Is there a way to redo the BootSL iso with your disabler.kext in it?

    Thanks for the help

@nutt318: If you’r using Retail SL 10.6.1 to install, on that MU link you can download kexts that I use for my 1525.
I tought that you already installed SL and you have problem with starting up SL without flags. My bad.

You can do that, but no need for that. ;)

Now… you say that you eject Boot132 CD, and you put inside Retail SL, you press f5, SL disk should appear, highlight it, wrote boot flags -v -x, hit return, and…? That screen you posted, to me it looks like your SL disk is bad. Cause your system, obviously is starting and looking for installed OS. Are you using original SL Retail DVD?

Maybe I’m wrong… and maybe some of advanced people here could help you more.

What I can say is that you need to check your SL retail DVD.

@yadinx: try with sleepenabler for 10.6.4, that should do the job for sleep problem.
And for internet with wire… I have no idea why you have problem. You said that you have problem with DNS. Did you try to type DNS manually in Network preferences > Ethernet > Advanced > DNS ? type some public DNS like 8.8.4.4 and see what happens, or use namebench (google for it) and see what DNS is best for you.

@C0r130n3: I tried with both sleepenablers and with my other problem, I found a guide : http://osx86.net/f57/how-to-snow-leopard-retail-10a432-on-p5k-t3380/post29505.html that claims to solve it. I did it, but I got nice KP, maybe because I used “Kext Utility” (When I completed the guide, I didn’t have a “kp” then, i tried Kext Utility and got a message “No HPETs available Applepower blah”. I tried to solve it, not success at all, so now I’m reinstalling all again, It should be fast

@C0r130n3: YES! I have been playing with this lovely computer for more than 3 years. I completely installed SL (up to step 7), skip step 8 and continued from step 9 to the end… end everything was Ok. I installed Firefox and upgraded to 10.6.4 without kexting anything (in step 8)! I am able to use a monitor (1440×900@60Hz), compaq keyboard and dell mouse via 4-port USB-hub, read multiple disk via USB etc… the only missing thing is the sound, and the sleeping capabilities I think; so I do not really have a problem with that… I am just returning to OS (I played with versions 8-9) and need to learn kext encoding and application. My problem was that I did vista installation in reverse order: SL then vista and everything went to trash! The most important problem was that I was not able to log in because neither keyboard could work! BUT BEFORE vista I was using OS X for a week or so and yes… without the kext :D

Of courser thanks to the people that developed the SL boot132, wonderful piece of work! and to you because the time you take helping us the OS X newbies.

P.S. I am going to keep working on the time machine… if it works I think it will be wonderful! You can save your most stable configuration and restore it when you do something wrong… like playing with kext files ;)

My suggestion is that you need to format your 1525, and do everything from the beginning. WITHOUT skiping steps of guide. If you can log in Win use “Mac fuse” or similar app so you can see your Mac partition, and backup your files from Mac. I wrote you what you should do to have dual boot. Follow that steps and everything should be fine. ;)

I did as the guide says but failed when installing the kext, sleep kext is the one failing because I am installing 10.6.3 and the kext worked on 10.6.1, so I am installing it without the kext… I think Voodo kext have some problems too.

    @EpicTracks:

I can see only two differences between this guide and your link

    1) the post installation steps use a compacted file (your link uses a .zip file.. (?) the standard file format for compacted stuff in Mac is .dmg) with the kexts and
    2) the guide is in Portuguese :D

Everything else is the same. I have been using BootSLv3wifi.iso (1st of the images on this page) without any problem (I have a SL 10.6.3 retail disk) other than installing an image of my previous windows vista system.

You can try with this .iso image; as I said before: I do not thing that your disk is any different from the retail one.
