Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard Retail Install Boot-132 Method
This guide only covers up to 10.6.1 Please do not update past that unless you know how to proceed.
Alright, I know a lot of you have been waiting for this so here it is.
Alright to start off with I have made two boot-132 cd’s.
BootSLv3.iso: Contains all of the Extra’s you need to make a quick install
BootSLv3-nowifi.iso: This is for those of you with the “Still Waiting for Root Device” problem.
BootSLv3-NoExtra.iso: Doesn’t have any Extras and will only be able to boot you into the install disk.
Let’s get started
Step 1: Make sure you have your copy of Snow Leopard (I would highly suggest purchasing it, it’s a great price for what it offers!)
Step 2: Download BootSL.iso and burn it to a CD.
Step 3: Put the burned boot cd into your cd-drive and on startup at the “DELL” splash screen press “F12″ now you will be at the boot selection menu, from here wait till your activity light on your cd-drive stops blinking and boot from the disk.
Step 4: Eject the boot-132 disk and replace it with your Snow Leopard Disk and again, wait till the activity light stops blinking. Once it’s stopped press “F5″ and the Install Disk will appear. Boot the disk with the boot flags “-v -x” you do this by simply typing -v -x. If you see it at the bottom left corner then you did it right, just hit enter. The disk will take about 5-10 min to load.
Step 5: Once in the install disk go to “Tools” from the menu bar and choose “Disk Utility.” Once you’ve gotten into the Disk Utility you have to select your hard drive and click on the partition tab and under the Volume Scheme choose 1 Partition and click “Options” and choose GPT. From this tab choose “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” and name it Macintosh HD and click apply.
Step 6: Close Disk Utility and go through the Installer. After it is done restart and again press “F12″ and boot from the Boot-132 disk, this time select the Macintosh HD partition and again boot with the “-v -x” boot flags.
Step 7: Now that you’ve booted into your partition open your disk and open the “Post-Install” folder and install “Chameleon 2 RC3″ After this go back to the Post-Install folder and open the Extra folder now highlight and copy everything in the Extra folder. After you have copied all the files open up your “Macintosh HD” and go to the “Extra” folder and paste everything you copied.
Step 8: Now Open up the Applications folder from the Post-Install folder and open “Kext Helper” now go to “Local Extensions” and Kext Helper all the files in there.
Step 9: Go to the PrefPanes Folder and look below for the Terminal Commands that you need to run to install the trackpad preference pane. After that just double click the VoodooHDA prefpane. (Terminal is located inside the Utilities folder that is in the Applications folder.)
Step 10: Open up the Sleep folder and double click the SleepWatcher.dmg and install both packages. After this open the “Install rc.wakeup” and run the commands in terminal. Now quit terminal and open it again and run
“sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0“
“sudo rm /private/var/vm/sleepimage”
Step 11: Restart and you will have everything running. You should go to the VoodooHDA prefpane in system preferences and adjust the “Speaker” volume and the #5 Microphone for the mic. After this you can go to the sound prefpane and select the speaker as your output.
Step 12: Go to Software update and update to 10.6.1 and you’re good to go all updated. Please post a comment if this guide worked for you.
Step 13: If this guide helped feel free to return the favor and donate anything you can.
@FreeBurma:
its not about being uncomfortable running a hackbook, i was just asking .. about it …i just saw it 2day
well i do Love Linux too i m big fan of Open sources
guys if u got any cool n good software for mac plz do tell d name at least
and 1 think if u guys found any alternative to windows Rainmeter for mac .. plz tell me
@FreeBurma:
Hey man, I never used any vulgar language nor did I comment on the quality of anybody’s site. Thomas and I have a previous issue from his site that he decided to bring here. I was simply telling him to get lost. he has his own site and has no business here. I don’t know who henk is or why he felt the need to comment to me about the quality of this site. I can only assume that henk is either a pen-name for thomas or is one of his little HS buddies that just wanted an excuse to advertise his site here.
@MilkyTech: I know man, but if I was going to give henk a hard time I had to include you and your STFU. No hard feelings?
I am truly astonished at the claims made here, and am appalled that Genaro would let the leadership of this site fall to someone as tempered and unhelpful as FreeBurma.
I originally came here looking to come together on a foolproof method for installing OS X, and was immediately spoken down to by FreeBurma when he misunderstood what I was trying to say. Then, MilkyTech decided to bring up old issues (which, unlike he claims, he brought here by posting that first comment) and tried to start problems here.
@FreeBurma- You may mean well, but don’t be so stubborn and short tempered towards users with questions, no matter how obvious the answer. I was shocked by your treatment of Lohens when he asked about adding the Kernel Flag for pmVersion, and your response of “NO.”
@MilkyTech- I forbid your from commenting on my site for being impatient and demanding answers. Grow up and get over it. Holding a grudge and pouting about it months later won’t get you anywhere.
@Lohens- My issue with you may have been an overreaction on my part, though a quick link back to the original guide would have been nice as the exact instructions were copied word for word. You do claim that your original comment did not come through since it had the link, so I’m willing to move on from that.
As for this Henk business- I don’t know Henk, I am not Henk, and I don’t necessaryily agree with Henk’s method of sharing his opinion. Nevertheless, they’re his own and so he is entitled to them.
There’s not really much more for me to say except that I’m astonished over what was been said here over the past couple of days. I don’t understand why people must cause drama in every aspect of life, going as far as doing so on a site about running Mac OS X on the Inspiron 1525. I will be removing this RSS feed so that I no longer have to bare to see this constant bashing over silly, nonsensical things. Best of luck to all.
@Thomas Piccirello: Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.
@MilkyTech:
I’m Henk, just an extravagant Dutch student, running OSX on my dell 1525, following guides + comments on both sites and making + sharing my own conclusions. Thats it. Thanks Italian Thomas, bye Milky Way.
Just a test, nothing to see here, move along please…

Ok i need help here people read this please!
On step 9 when after i run the commands for Trackpad.prefPane it goes threw fine but then when i double click on VoodooHDA.prefPane it says “System Preferences quit unexpectedly”. And it didn’t say that before I typed in the commands. HELP ME SOMEBODY!
same problem HELP!!
I think if you use a newer version of VoodooHDA you’ll be OK. I’m using v.0.2.61 now, and there is a newer 0.2.62, and perhaps even newer? There is also a small helper application called Voodoo HDA Helper that you can install as a login item in your System Preferences>Accounts that will reset your VoodooHDA System Preferences settings each time you boot so that you won’t have to manually readjust them each time. Once you have both this newer version of VoodooHDA and also Voodoo HDA Helper you should be OK?
As for the Voodoo preference pane crashing, I think they all say version 1.0, but there are separate Leopard, Snow Leopard, and 64bit versions I think, so if you’re having crash problems after getting a current version of VoodooHDA.kext, you may possibly have the wrong version of the Preference Pane?
The latest development of VoodooHDA is happening over at projectosx.com and you can find downloads for v.0.2.62 or newer there.
i ve 10.6 for a while now…..have been using it to the best…untill one day i realised my photo booth doesnt work…i ve black screen with blue light flashung beside the camera…..please help

Is this method possible to install Snow Leopard on an existing Leopard partition? I currently have win7/Leopard with chameleon.
I found how to update mac all the way up to 10.6.4.
10.6.2 – http://www.dailyblogged.com/2064/updating-to-snow-leopard-10-6-2/
10.6.3 – http://www.dailyblogged.com/updating-to-snow-leopard-10-6-3/
10.6.4 – http://www.dailyblogged.com/updating-to-snow-leopard-10-6-4/
@Rahul:
go to http://www.dailyblogged.com/retail-snow-leopard-installation-guide/
@frog:
I did go through that tutorial. And might I add, dailyblogged is the reason I have Leopard right now. But the guide says I cannot install on the partition am already booted in. The main problem is I don’t have extra space to create a new partition.
Am thinking of using the USB method, i,e I will make the USB bootable and use that to install on my Leopard partition. This way, I will still have my current Leopard OS to modify whatever files I would to prep the USB. Would that work?
dose this method work with 10.6.3 disc?
cant see why it wouldnt – you will need the right sleep enabler kext though !
ny idea were id get that?
http://www.dailyblogged.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/SleepEnabler.kext_.10.6.3.zip think this might help –
you should remove the sleep enabler from the extensions directory, then use kext installer to install the new sleep enabler……that should be all !
you may also need the legacy kext depending on you CPU !
thank u
erm am abit of a noob sorry
were’s the extension directory?
do youy mean the local extensions folder on the bootloader disc?
t
Yes, if you follow the instructions at the top of the page but use the sleepenabler.kext for 10.6.3, let us know how it goes !
will do
okidoke
sorry but jus to get this straight replace the sleepenabler.kext in the Download BootSLv3-wifi.iso file with the one in the link and then burn that to a disc?
or jus burn the sleepenabler.kext from the link to a disk and boot from that ?
there is a chance you will get support here, it does however apear you may have limited knowledge and may find this all to be quite an ordeal. I hope you persevere, you should find all the info here and in othe forums to get the outcome yourafter.
If you follow the outcome exactly as above, then use the new sleepenabler.kext instead of the one on the bootslv disk that should be fine.
Load it from a usb or a cd or whatever means you can think of – (i downloaded it from safemode) if you have the ability to replace the sleep enabler on the cd, do so. Just be sure you use the right version of the kext otherwise your instal wont work.
right ive replaced the file created an iso image and burned it to a disc and its not booting.
Mate, what i would suggest is just run it as per instructions above, dont make any changes – but have the new sleep enabler on a usb or something……
puttin it on a memory stick doesn’t make a difference because without out it my 1525 freezes between stages 4 and 5 and with the memory stick the same thing happens. i boot with flags -v-x the white screen with the apple logo and the swerl underneath appears then it reboots but the screen doesnt come back on until you hit the power button and then this causes a grey screen with and mac os curser to appear in the top left corner of the screen this cannot be moved using the trackpad.
I followed this tutorial but after each boot flag i added arch=i386 so it would boot into 32bit mode the 1525 WILL NOT boot in 64bit.
Yes i used my 10.6.3 disk on this but it would not work in 64bit mode so i always have to boot with arch=i386
I got everything installed in 32bit on my 1525 (because that’s all that would ever boot without a kernel panic) and got everything working except audio. Voodo HDA gives me a message that says “Can’t get registry-entry path” Please Help me!!!
so when you booted you booted with arch=i386 after flags or instead of -x-v flags?
im stuck at numbers 3 &4. i burnt the boot132 and iatkos s3 but both wont boot. Everytime i boot from the boot132 disk, it won’t load anything and just goes to the chameleon bootloader. I put the iatkos s3 in and nothing happens either. The chameleon bootloader just shows my current HD i would be on. Please help?
@frog: @ frog, follow the steps very carefully. there is nothing wrong with the guide or your machine.cp -R /Volumes/SL\ boot132/Post-Install/PrefPanes/Trackpad.prefPane /System/Library/PreferencePanes/ this is where uyou might have made mistskes…ensure thar you type all the SPACES…and everything will be ok… good luck
@tomkop: no i booted with -v -x arch=i386
@Emmanuel: what does the trackpad prefpane have to do with anything
Why not include the words “Dell Inspiron 1525″ in the title so this post shows up appropriately in searches? I mean this isn’t a general guide is it? Isn’t this specifically for this laptop? You can change the title on wordpress and no it doesn’t break the permalink.
@IronOxide:
Sorry but that wouldn’t be fair. This guide really helps to install OSx in ANY system with boot 132. If you need custom support you could go to forum.
@Emmanuel: i tryed and it was no help.:(
I still need an expanation!
Hi
I have iATKOS S3 MAC snow leopard 10.6.3. I am using DELL INSPIRON 1525. I have installed windows xp on primary C drive. I tried to install above version which is for non apple PC’s on my last logical drive. Also please tell me which boot 132 disk i use to boot. I burned ur first(Download BootSLv3-wifi.iso) cd but it didnt worked(command console did not appear). Please guide me to install MAC on my laptop.
@sagar: Not sure what your issue is, iAtkos is not supported here. and if you follow the instructions above you should have no issues. the command console doesnt appear you have to open it yourself from applications/utilities.
@Frog: im quite sure when you install the voodoo HDA it does give this message every time i have run the install, i just do it again to be sure, reboot into osx without any flags then its all good.
someone help i cant find out what this is
@frog: VoodooHDA or Native AppleHDA solutions have both been covered here multiple times. You should look back through all the comments before asking questions that have been already answered. Noticed you have been over on Thomas’s site (dailyblogged). Did you miss the part over there about using native AppleHDA audio?
For VoodooHDA, if that is what you want to use, look here: http://www.projectosx.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=355
Once you have installed the latest AppleHDA or VoodooHDA you can remove sleepwatcher, if you have it installed. Look at this; http://iphonetool.blogspot.com/2009/02/uninstall-sleepwatcher.html
Wondering what sleepwatcher has to do with audio? It unloads and reloads the VoodooHDA extension to get sound back after a system sleep. This was a problem with the, now very very old, version included in the install cd.
Both of these links were located in less than ONE MINUTE by doing a google search!!!
As a general rule: a Hackintosh requires a certain amount of skill and knowledge and the willingness to search for and find solutions for the problems you WILL run into (like updating the extension cache in /Extra. The guide here is almost a year old, a search for updates and improvements should have been the FIRST thing you did.
@frog: i booted with this flag an just got kernal panic any suggestions on what to do?
no me bootea el Boot132 como lo soluciono
FYI – In case anyone’s interested got the ‘Magic Trackpad’ & installed the dmg no problems.
All works on my 1525 (10.6.4) as expected.
I’m using it along side BTT (BetterTouchTool) but am undecided if it will every replace my MM
I have dell 1525 with 10.6.3, trying to install parallels 5 or vmware and its not working
with parallels I get a error saying that virtualization was not supported.
can this be fixed?
