Great guide, by the way. I am happy to donate and will do so later today.
I installed using iPC and have been up and running for several weeks.
When I power up my 1525 now, it gets to the Chameleon screen and then I get the following error:
EBIOS read error: Device Timeout
Block xxxxxxxxx Sectors 64
I booted using the iPC disk and ran the disk utility and used the repair disk option which said that it did not find any issues. I also ran repair permissions.
When I rebooted after that, I get the same error.

Wolfer: FreeBurma,Nice work on creating a new DSDT.aml to work along with AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext.But, have to agree, 10.5.8 is not worth the effort considering the effort is best put into 10.6 right now — as I have about a little time as you do.I did want to ask you a question though since you went there — to 10.5.8, that is.When you did, did you find ANYWAY to have the Energy Saver prefPane retain and ‘Battery’ related settings?I was only able to get the 1525 to see that it was on the Power Adapter regardless of it actually being on AC and/or Battery. There was no method of replacing prefPanes, PM bundles, patched AppleSMBIOS.kext’s, etc. that I could find to fix this.I got my sleep to work perfect by just installing the 9.7 kernel on 10.5.8, and thought that might bring my Energy Saver settings back, but alas they were still gone.I have since dropped back to a 10.5.7 backup. And again, I’ll stay there until I have time to put into installing 10.6 — if and when I ever get the time. Thanks for any feedback on your experiences regarding the above though.I see that a lot of people had the exact same issues, but VERY FEW that actually every got a solid solution to work for them.Again, I just want to confirm *someone* else saw what I did and if it was correctable, how.‘Presh.– Dave

Wolfer/Dave: I have been using the Voodoobattery extension and that works as well as any solution I am aware of. My energy saver preference panel has both A/C and battery settings and works as I would expect. The one issue is that when returning to A/C from battery the time remaining to fully charged sticks at 10 hours and does not update until the battery is fully charged.

DSDT patching/modifications remain a great mystery to me. I can run the "automated" patchers and get something useful but that's the extent of my expertise. I've been messing around with editing mine to enable "clamshell" sleep with no positive results. I'd also like to do the "patch" that I have heard about to enable our sound device, but I have failed! If anyone has had any luck with these please clue us in on the secret (post the code and some words on how you got it to work).

ZoharXero:
You can try this http://www.osx86.es/?p=563 (site is in spanish only) this fix allows native stepping on intel laptops, it neeeds patched dsdt with-newHPET flag and AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext.I tested it in 10.5.7 retail, and worked pretty well. For install just download the leopard version, copy smbios.plist to /Extra and Legacy ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin.kext to /Extra/Extensions folder. Both have values of a MacbookAir1,1, is recommended to edit them to a closer profile to your hardware, i think for dell 1525 will be macbookpro3,1.
To make sure is working open ioregistry explorer inlcuded on the zip and search for entry
ACPI_SMC_Platformplugin, if shows 0×0 value means is working, CoolBook and Hardware Monitor also show stepping.
All the credits is for Evosx86team.

ZoharXero: Thanks for that. It's very interesting. I was able to get P-State switching to work loading this plist only extension from /Extra. However, when this is loaded from the /Extra folder it does fail because of a dependency (but apparently not completely). This is VERY specific to your CPU model. The 1525 has shipped with many different CPU types spanning three or four major CPU families. Mine is a Core 2 duo T5450 (yea, low end!). When I loaded this from /S/L/E so as to get it to load completely it caused a UI server crash on boot. This is because it tried to set the C-State of the X3100 video controller. That works nicely on a real MacBook3,1 or Macbook Air1,1 but not so well on our 1525's.

I do understand the purpose for this patch (after comparing it to the "stock" plist the X.5.8 ACPI_SMC_Platformplugin.kext) and how it might save you from a DSDT.aml patch, but I don't see the purpose of it to only do P-States control. Voodoopower does that perfectly and is rock solid. It also comes with a monitoring app if you use the full version not the mini version.

Power management is a big topic, a good place to start is here: 'http://www.techarp.com/showarticle.aspx?artno=420&pgno=0'. This is a VERY simple overview but interesting nonetheless.

Hi,

Here is my address : Noyasoft@gmail.com
Hw is outsource 1525 along with BT and no built in camera.
Is it possible to install directly from the retail CD?
I've long though of buying this OS as I truly think it's worth the price, though as far as I know Apple binded the OS license to their Hardware so I'm not sure if I'll be a legitimate customer after having purchased the retail CD.

Let's continue this over the e-mail :)

Eitan.

Don't !

After playing for 2 days with this update I ended up with a system that can't shutdown (OpenHaltRestart will not help)
If I could I would have restored 10.5.7 without any hesitation :)

Thanks :)
Adding the VoodooPower back made it somewhat better.
You are absolutely right, this update doesn't worth the risk and the time needed to restore the system to a working condition.

Thanks for the tips & the help!!
Eitan.

Short answer:

No. Reinstall.

Longer answer:

You can see my previous comments concerning the sleep issue. I will not provide support for that beyond what I have already indicated. I'll assume you went ahead with this update BEFORE you came here and read the comments, in which case I wish you the best.

If you updated AFTER reading my warnings and recommendations, well then, now you see why.

Look people, I didn't spend the time to go through this and then report on the findings for my own satisfaction or to stroke my ego. I'm trying to help you and save you from a potentially difficult situation. `nuff said.

FreeBurma: Concerning the update.I have been able to get everything including sleep to work.Sleep required a patch to dsdt.aml to allow the use of AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext without a KP.Of course there is no speed stepping out of the box with this.More on that later. For those who have already made the plunge, go over to extremely mac, search out the dsdt patcher (1.0.1e) and run it with the -newHPET flag.Install the resultant dsdt.aml, remove voodoopower extension, and install the AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement extension. I also needed to install the OpenHaltRestart extension. That should get you on your way…Of course, you may also brick your system… You’ve been warned! For the moment I’m standing by my statement that this update is not worth the trouble.

Hi,

My system is up and running once again, with 10.5.8. (-x after setup and restoring the kext files from the 10.5.7 package did the trick).
However, sleep\ hibernate are not working.
Any idea?

Any idea?

hey guys , i didn't upgrade to 10.5.8 yet

i just downloaded the update and ideneb tool 10.5.8 .. is there any thing to do before upgrading ?

when i upgraded to 10.5.7 .... it went very well with me ( through apple combo update 10.5.7 )

i didn't face any kernel panic or anything else .. just i had to reinstall couples of kexts again

also what is disabler.kext ???

this is a quote from i deneb site

"The updates allow you to keep all main patch installed with the distro ( es. AppleHDA.kext, AppleSMBIOS.kext, AppleACPIPlatform.kext, IONetWorkingFamily.kext etc.. ) and you can find the original files instead in Kext Disabled."

Thanks for that Thomas.

I'm going to say this one more time. Thinking of updating to 10.5.8? Don't. It would take a lot of time to support all the issues that go along with this update on this hardware. If you go ahead with this your asking for a world of hurt...

Booting with the -x flag will allow him to get in also. Safe Mode almost always works for me and really helped me with my 10.5.8 woes (Before I switched back to 10.5.7). Just remember that with safe mode, it can take you up to 3 minutes to boot.

Sorry, forgot to say that you need to remove the Disabler extension to allow AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement to load. If this makes you uncomfortable, it should. Be careful!

Concerning the 10.5.8 update. I have been able to get everything including sleep to work. Sleep required a patch to dsdt.aml to allow the use of AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext without a KP. Of course there is no speed stepping out of the box with this. More on that later.

For those who have already made the plunge, go over to extremely mac, search out the dsdt patcher (1.0.1e) and run it with the -newHPET flag. Install the resultant dsdt.aml, remove voodoopower extension, and install the AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement extension. I also needed to install the OpenHaltRestart extension. That should get you on your way... Of course, you may also brick your system... You've been warned!

For the moment I'm standing by my statement that this update is not worth the trouble.

10.5.8 after one day. As of now this is a good news and bad news story. The bad news, sleep/hibernate is not working. Using the 10.5.7 kernel and system.kext gives working sleep but that's not a solution, that's ugly.

The good news is that every thing else works more or less as before. USB appears to work at USB 2 speeds with the stock extensions. WiFi works with stock extensions although the led doesn't turn on or off. Bluetooth on-off works with a quick plist edit (google for that). Ethernet requires a hex edit to give correct Mac address (google for that). Voodoo power and battery are as before and the latest VoodooPS2 keyboard and trackpad all work the same. AppleHDA has to be replaced with the edited one and HDAEnabler is of course required.

This leaves a stock /S/L/E other than HDA + the Voodoo stuff. I placed my edited 10.5.8 versions of the bluetooth and networking family extensions in /Extra and they 'override' the untouched versions in /S/L/E. The trackpad preference pane edit is the same as before (see the post on the voodoo forums). I think that covers it as of this moment, and my take on this is to recommend passing on this update for now. If you do decide to give a try please do a complete backup.

Actually it wasn't on the Apple website that I read that, it was on the 'appleinsider' site & it stated it may be the last. Though reading elsewhere it seems the money is on one more update (10.5.9) before 'snow leopard' -
