Got Stealth? New Chameleon is out.

**THIS POST IS OUTDATED PLEASE REFER TO THE SNOW LEOPARD GUIDE**

For those of you unaware of what chameleon is it is the bootloader that you use to start mac.

Are you tired of it looking all boring?

Well good news for you, the chameleon team just released the newest bootload which even mac users will be jealous of.

1) You can find your way over to http://chameleon.osx86.hu/articles/chameleon-20rc1-is-out and download the installer package.

2) Run that installer and you’re in business

3) Your startup screen will look this now. Sexy right?

And people said this was vaporware. The chameleon has changed colors and the change is good with all the “GUI Goodness.” Grab this, install it and let your HackBook and Hackintosh kick some ass.

Donate to these guys! Without this great bootloader you’d still be stuck on old abandoned code sifting through files with your editor.

Looks great and works perfectly. Very easy installation. Thanks for the tip off.

  5. There isn’t much to show and if you are using the separate buttons I would say that it isn’t necessary to update although I’m pretty positive that it wouldn’t do anything to your mbr.

  10. I have yet to try and mess with windows 7 bootloader but I hear it’s a beast. You can try to repair the windows 7 bootloader by popping in the disk and booting from it and click repair which might solve the issue, if not you can use the windows 7 bootloader instead of chameleon by making to windows partition active. You can do that by following this guide http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=22844

    thank you!

I just recently started my dual boot again and I got the same problem but I found a fix,

It’s sort of complicated, I can screen share with you and fix it. Let me know if you’d like me to.

If not… here are the instructions and the pack you need.

    1. Install Chameleon with Installer

    2. Download chameleon bootloader files http://macyourpc.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/standalone.zip

    3. Use sudo -s to assume root privileges.

    4. Install boot0 to the MBR:

    fdisk -f boot0 -u -y /dev/rdiskX (X and Y are disk and partition numbers)

    5. Install boot1h to the bootsector of your OS X partition:

    dd if=boot1h of=/dev/rdiskXsY

    6. Copy the ‘boot’ file to your root partition:

    cp boot /

    7. Make sure OS X is the active partition.

Again, this can be complicated, if you need help, let me know.

ok i followed step by step but seems like it corrupted again my win7 boot… beside the steps, do i have to copy all of the files to some directory in win7 partition?

  14. no, Did you link to the directory of the pack or drag the correct files to the terminal?

  15. I’ve read around quite a bit and have found that the reason you cant dual-boot it using chameleon on an MBR install is that Windows 7 creates a 200 mb boot partition which cant be read, so I guess your stuck with EasyBCD.
    Sorry about that.

If you want you can attempt a full reinstall by doing this, which could help with the dual-boot.

Hi! I’m back…I was here a while back but anyways, this is my problem now…

I had this working on my Mac/XP dual-boot but my XP partition became corrupted because of viruses, mal-ware, etc. I completely re-installed Vista AND Windows 7 on different partitions for a tri-boot. However now, I’m unable to boot Mac because once I turn on my computer, it directly goes to the Vista/7 boot. What should I do so that I get the Chameleon loading up first?

  17. The problem with windows 7 is that it hates not being the active partition so you can’t really use chameleon with it unless you do some tricky things to get around it.

What you can do is use EasyBCD 2.0 in Windows 7, I included the link of where to get it.

    http://neosmart.net/forums/showthread.php?t=642

You can try setting your os x partition as active but if it doesn’t work (Which I doubt it will) you’re going to have to set windows 7 as your active boot partition again which would require you to boot into some sort of terminal or use the gparted live cd to set your windows 7 partition as active.

In short I would advise using EasyBCD.

Putting aside Chameleon, what exactly would I do to put Mac OS X on the Window’s bootloader? I’ve come to found that it’s not possible to manually edit the boot.ini file in Vista/Seven…That’s how I got Mac OS X on my XP’s Windows Bootloader list.

  19. That’s why I pointed you to EasyBCD it will do it for you.

Every time I try to do this, I get an error that renders my OSx86 install unbootable!

    Specs:
    2.17 GHz Core 2 duo – working
    2GB 667 Mhz RAM
    Webcam – working
Intel GMA950/GMAX3100 – working WITH SLEEP TRICK

I had another install before that hard drive died and that worked PERFECTLY! I was on 10.5.2, as I am on now.
