Full Core Image/Quartz Extreme Support on 1440×900 Screens

(Thanks Osmac for compiling and figuring this out for all the 1440×900 Dell Inspiron 1525 Hackbooks)

I read that this is still not clearly described anywhere and I have been able to find the right way to accomplish this. I do not claim to be the originator, but feel it should be shared at this site for easy reference. The below has been done both in a setup with Kalyway 10.5.2 upgraded to 10.5.6 and on a fresh installed XxX 10.5.6 that upon upgrade or install yielded nothing but a black screen.

CI/QE support is all about the right version of kexts, or more specifically AppleIntelGMAX3100FB.kext.

For completeness, for 10.5.6 (I know 10.5.5 needs a different set) the correct versions are:

1.5.30   AppleIntelGMAX3100.kext
1.5.18   AppleIntelGMAX3100FB.kext
1.5.30   AppleIntelGMAX3100GA.plugin
1.5.30   AppleIntelGMAX3100GLDriver.bundle
1.5.30   AppleIntelGMAX3100VADriver.bundle
Natit.kext (84kB on disk)

1) “Kext Helper b7″ all of the files in the pack.

2) Do not forget to remove AppleIntelIntegrateFrameBuffer.kext from extensions

The 1.5.18 version of AppleIntelGMAX3100FB.kext is the one that was initially installed by Kalyway 10.5.2.

1440×900 Pack

If I recall correctly, this is the “Slashack” solution: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=71784&st=500&p=1007763&#entry1007763

OMG…I don’t know what the hell just happened, but it finally works! I have a T61 Thinkpad. I’ve been messing with this forever. My X3100FB.kext was already 1.5.18, so I just added Natit.kext and got nowhere. I replaced my 1.5.18 with the one from your Zip file and sure enough, I got it working with QE/CI. Jesus bro, this has been a huge hassle. Thanks for the post.

    Tried this and failed hardly…
Installed it all except natit, dunno why, because I didn’t saw it…

Now display stays blue, somebody got an Idea?

  4. At the boot screen type “-x” without the quotation marks and boot into safe mode, from there install natit.kext.

same result, booting only lasts longer. Going to reinstall it, just tried this stuff to get GMA drivers working…

Or another Idea: how do I do point to?

    Yep I’ve got this version.
How do I do point two, I just got this version with your tutorial working.
Just ethernet and vga were not working, so I tried it with this stuff. But point two I did not do and not this natit.kext.

The result is this blue screen. I am realy sorry for not getting this, just trying to get into it
Thank you very much for helping

  9. If you can boot into “-x” then open terminal and type

    sudo -s

    rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/AppleIntelIntegrateFrameBuffer.kext

    and If I can’t?

    ReplyReply
  11. can you? if not you’re going to have to boot using “-s” and mount your harddrive and delete the kext from there. But you should be able to boot into safe mode.

Is there an easy way to clarify if my inspiron 1525 hackbook can do this resolution? I don’t want to make the mistake of trying to do something and screwing it up. :)

    ReplyReply
  13. The only way you would know is if you specifically purchased it with that resolution.

If you don’t know then chances are you don’t have it.

Though Dell discontinued the Inspiron 1525 there are some new 1525s available with an “nVidia GeForce GB 8600M GT” instead of Intel GMA X3100.

Any ideas, if those Dells can be “hackintoshed”?

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

  15. Why yes indeed if you install from the iPC dvd you should see an option of “NVInject 0.2.1 256 VRAM” and you just choose that and you should be good. Be advised that I’ve never handled that kext but I assume that it works considering many people have had success with that video card.

    Good Luck to you!

Make sure to post any questions you have. I’ll be sure to try to respond in a timely manner.

  18. You should just have to kext helper appleyukon2.kext and then repair disk permissions and everything should work.

    Hello all,

How can tell if my Dell 1525 can support 1440×900?
I’ve removed the Vista installation 3 minutes after I got the laptop and I don’t remember what was the resolution.
Is there any way to know for sure before attempting this patch?

    Thanks,
    Eitan.

Just tested it on my 1525 Dell laptop and it didn’t work :-(
Had to go into safe made and restore the old kext files.

    Oh well .. :)

  21. Noyasoft- If you had the higher resolution (1440×900) then when running OS X you would not have QE/CI support and I believe in System Preferences your system would be listed as 1440×900

It seems your screen resolution in 1280×800. This instruction is for those of us that have the 1440×900 resultion LCD panel.

Your resolution should have QE/CI with the regular video kexts.

    I don’t know why,,,

  26. If you’d like you can follow my iPC guide and you should have QE/CI right away and you will have 10.5.6

    Try kext helpering these http://macyourpc.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/ci.zip

after that you need to press “advanced” “tag cache” and “run” and then go to “Disk Utility” and “Repair Disk Permissions” on your Macintosh HD.

I posted this in another thread, if you try to do this hack you need to check if your display it’s capable, these are the 4 different resolutions available for this laptop:

    WXGA 1280 x 800

    WXGA with TrueLife 1280 x 800

    WXGA+ with TrueLife 1440 x 900

    WSXGA+with TrueLife 1680 x 1050

what about 1680×1050? I have the same model with 1680×1050. Currently I am running 10.5.7 with no major problems except that I could get only 1600×1000. not 1680×1050. I have tried with your kexts but no change. the 1680×1050 option is right there, but if I select that blue scree of death. I have to hard boot and system automaically logs in with 1600×1000. any ideas?

    I have 1525 with 1440×900 screen

I install iPC and most things work, I also upgraded it to 10.5.7 with no trouble.

I am only able to boot in VESA (1024×768) graphics mode…. by deleting all the AppleIntelGMA* extensions.

Using any of the extensions recommended for 1525 (both 1280×800 and 1440×900 resolution ones) …. I boot to a black screen (system appears to be running – just have black screen)….. I cannot boot into safe (-x) mode with these kexts present… I must delete them, and then can get back to 1024×768.

How can I troubleshoot this? I am so close, just need correct graphics working.

i dunno what just happened…. i had it sitting there while i was reading…. it had been booted to a black screen for a few minutes.

    i bumped the mouse… and it’s working @1440×900 :-D :-D :-D

is this the “sleep trick” ????

Ok, installed “iPC OSx86 10.5.6 Universal FINAL” with no issues, but after reboot and loading with -v -f, im stuck with no display. I closed laptop as instructed and waited for the pulse, and then opened up again. I get a blank screen and then display shuts off.

Using Dell Inspiron 1525 with 1400×900 (16:10) display. Any ideas on what to do next? tried booting in safe mode and got the same results.

    Hi BlueTaz, try this out:
boot in single user : -s then when you have the prompt type in :
fsck -fy (i m not sure about this one anyway it should be written just above just type in the same command)
then you type in mount -uw /
    mkdir /Drivers
mv /System/Library/Extensions/AppleIntelGMA* /Drivers (you just remove the damn drivers to the folder you just created drivers)
    reboot
Then you should boot in minimum mode and have your screen. Then just go and install the pack you can find on this website using kexthelper. Repair disk permissions, reboot, but before install chamelon V2 and use DSDT.aml so there is no need for the sleep trick
This worked for me and believe me i tried for a very looooooooooooooooong time :p
Coz whatever i did it installed the drivers….
