Media Keys on your Hackintosh
**THIS GUIDE IS OUTDATED PLEASE REFER TO THE SNOW LEOPARD GUIDE**
I know a lot of people have these keys working but for some of you that are still lost in the dark, I’m writing this quick guide.
1) Download appleps2controller.kext and then kexthelper it.
2) Now you can download Butler and install it. Then Reboot.
3) Once you’ve installed that download Butler Configuration and double click the file inside. When you do that you’ll be prompted with a screen and click “Overwrite”
4) Lastly you’re going to have to add butler to your startup items. You do this by going to System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items and dragging the butler app into it.
After this you should have butler up and running and pressing play will automatically open itunes.
Unfortunately I was not able to get this working on my Kalyway updated machine but I was able to get this working just fine on my iPC install. Thanks!
Thomas I think what was happening is that in your Kalyway install the appleps2controller contained a keyboard plugin and then you would try to install the correct keyboard kext outside of the plugin creating a conflict. Or at least that was what was happening to me for a while when my media keys weren’t working.
If i install this kext wont it override the one that supports my two finger scrolling is it possible to get both working?
Yes, just skip that step and the one that works for 2 finger scrolling should also work for the dell media keys.
Having some problems when I install it with the Brazilian Portuguese ABNT2 stuff
the button that has the character “?” starts iTunes as well…
very bizarre
what may be that…
it only happens after I install the appleps2controller.kext from here
http://img188.imageshack.us/img188/8028/1525.jpg
that button does the same thing that pressing the Media Key “play”
that is an absurd, I can’t understand that
and that button is essencial for me, since it includes “?” “/” and “°”

here is the one that comes with ABNT2 package and makes it work properly, but makes that button start iTunes as well…
very weird
help me =]
thanks
Pedro, seeing as though I dont know about other keyboard arrangements for other languages.
I know you can remap keys using this
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/14495
Give that a shot.
How did you change the “ApplePS2Keyboard” files?
That is where we got the problems
ApplePS2Keyboard.kext -> MacOS -> ApplePS2Keyboard
ApplePS2Keyboard.kext is inside ApplePS2Controller
they have different configurations… how may I edit them?
I’m sorry to say I’m not sure what you’re talking about? please explain a bit more.
The problem is that the button I need is not recognized by OS X native…
it is a bit different…
it isn’t related with keymap, but with the system view over the physical keyboard
if you can bundle both files in one, in order to make have media keys and that button working would be nice for us, brazilian users.
here we got them:

thanks =]
correction to the link:
http://www.easy-share.com/1905209579/ApplePS2Keyboardfiles.zip
Inside the ApplePS2Controller.kext we have a bunch of directories, and one that leads to another kext file, called ApplePS2Keyboard.kext
There, we got to go:
ApplePS2Keyboard.kext -> MacOS -> ApplePS2Keyboard
In the last file the difference lives; it makes OS X recognize IN A DIFFERENT WAY the physical keyboard. With the ApplePS2Controller.kext which comes with ABNT2.pkg there is support to the button that isn’t working with the ApplePS2Controller.kext which is needed for Dell Media keys.
Any ideas on how to get Quicksilver to recognize the media keys? I really don’t like iTunes and prefer to use something more like foobar2000: Cog. I’d also rather not install Butler when Quicksilver does everything I need.
I’m able to access menu commands from Quicksilver using the User Interface Access plugin, but cannot create a trigger which recognizes any media keys. Perhaps there is another way to input that key?
Thanks.
Pedro, I’m sorry for getting back to you so late but I’m not too sure how to mess with the keyboard, the media keys were mapped by macgirl over at insanelymac.com
I attempted to map the keys in quicksilver and you are right they don’t really work, I’ll give this another shot in a bit when I’m a bit less busy with studying.
Thanks, Genaro. It’s possible to grab the key codes for the media keys using xev, so that’s a start. Question is whether there’s a way to enter a key code and have that key press emulated so it’s passed to Quicksilver (or any other app).
I believe the stop and rewind buttons are read in quicksilver.
You know that butler can be configured for music programs other than iTunes right?
I think i am having this problem because no matter how many times i install the kexts for the keyboard and trackpad it dosn’t work. How did you get this to work?
is there an alternative to butler as they now charge $20 for it
