Dell Inspiron 1525 Hackintosh Community!
I figured that the people over at Espresso Report would benefit from having a place to come together and update their findings for their Inspiron 1525.
There have recently been some really big developments for the 1525 which include the ethernet port and the card reader, as well as the AppleHDA.kext so with that being said I’ve made the site so that if you sign up for it you can write your own posts and I’ll approve them as I see their importance. I’ve contemplated opening up a forum but I figure that the laptop is so close to perfect that it isn’t needed.
So lets get that Dell Inspiron 1525 running Mac OS X!

Great idea Thomas
Excellent idea, indeed! I just ask that you don’t forget us folks on the 1440×900 model, as information seems limited yet many of us have had problems that users of the other screen model have not.
For example, iAtkos simply would not work for me, while Kalyway did. Haven’t tried iPC, but I’m interested!
Jamie, from my understanding is that the 1440×900 model doesn’t have Quartz Extreme supported, I will look around for you and get back to you on that though.
Thanks for the response, Genaro.
Actually, I have my 1525 running 10.5.2 with QE/CI as installed from Kalyway. It may just be a driver thing, but I’m hesitant to upgrade to 10.5.6 as all previous attempts failed, and this laptop is critical to my study.
Osmac over at [what is now] DailyBlogged did mention that he was able to upgrade his 1440×900 1525 to 10.5.6 by, as I quote:
“I have been able to resolve this by removing all newly installed ApplieIntelGMAX3100*.kexts and (after backing up first) restoring the AppleIntelGMAX3100 and the AppleIntelGMAX3100FB kexts from the 10.5.2 install (including repairpermissions) BEFORE the reboot at the end of the update cycle.” – Osmac
I have not yet tried this but I assume that it also works with the kexts which do give QE/CI support, as found here: http://www.mediafire.com/?zmycm0mmny0.
So more than anything I’d just like to know which distributions work with the 1440×900 model out of the box. I know that Kalyway does, but I’d prefer to use a more updated and seemingly more professional distribution.
In any case, thank you for making this site and please don’t forget us
.
Oh excellent, well I’ll try to do a bit of research but I have yet to have any problems with iPC, and I think it would probably work quite well with the 1440×900 although I have no way of knowing.
Jamie, if you’d like when you upgrade to 10.5.6 you can write a quick guide on how to get the 1440×900 working with a new distro and I’ll publish it.
I’m SO Glad the website is back! Thanks!!!!
Sorry for the downtime. Yesterday was the first time dreamhost has ever messed up on me.
Jamie, Genaro,
I am running 10.5.6 with full CI/QE support.
I will write a quick guide as soon as I have been able to register (my name has been registered, but I cannot get a password…)
why not just buy an apple? i don’t get it.
Well firstly lets take your entry level apple which would be the white macbook
The price of a white macbook is $999
The price of my dell was $500
Another thing is that you get a certain level of fun and accomplishment when getting a hackintosh running that you do not get with purchasing a mac.
I understand where you are coming from and getting a hackintosh up and running just isn’t fun for some people and I can respect that but for those who it is fun for then have at it.
If you don’t understand why we do what we do, fair enough and if you have the cash to shell out then have at it.
Genaro i agree with you 100% half the cost..same power//even more,,more fun customization…media buttons etc…man i love DELL+APPLE HAHA
Hello,
I am along time mac user and am wanting to give buiding a hackintosh a try. I am interested in the Dell 1525 and have done some searching for for one. There seems to be quite a bit of variety in the 1525 model, some are Celeron, some Dual Core. Can you provide some guidance on which ones to consider or more importantly which ones to avoid. What are the key hardware specs to look for?
Thanks, Kevin
All the different processors work fine but I would say go to the core2duo instead of the pentium dual core.
I would say go for a 1280×900 screen with a 1395 wi-fi card. Everything else is standard.
Choosing a Core2 Duo over a Pentium Dual Core will give you a minimal (speed) performance increase since a Pentium Dual Core (Not to be confused with Pentium D) is basically a Core2 Duo. The area where you will appreciate having a Core2 Duo comes in improved battery life as the Core2 Duo uses less battery power and runs cooler. For portables, battery is king.
all ok. but cant shutdown and how can hibernate on MAC OS X
I’m trying to install 10.5.6 retail dvd from scratch on a Dell 1525. I use boot 132 cd generic iso and swap with the leopard disc, but right after the leopard install starts the screen goes blank and then won’t refresh properly. If I plug in an external monitor the screen on the external monitor will show up corrupt.
Does anyone have a boot132 iso with additional/modified kexts for Dell 1525? I have intel core 2 duo and intel 965 chipset.
CodeWarrior how experienced are you with the terminal and such? We have currently got a boot-132 disc working and we are attempting to straighten out all of the legacy kexts and such, If you’d like to participate and are experienced with terminal and such please email me at gbonilla@mandomhood.com
I want test install dvd retail
I’m trying to get the retail DVD up and running on my Dell 1525, and really not having much success. I can get to the grey screen with the apple logo, which displays the busy icon… this then goes to blue, then blank, and I have had no success to date getting this to wake up.
Plugging in an external monitor, I can display everything up to a certain point… using -v -f I get a garbled output with pink and black lines after the terminal display goes away, which I guess means there is an issue with resolution mismatch between the external monitor and OSX, or incompatibility with the laptop?
Using just -f I get to a similar point (switches the output of the external monitor back to the internal, as a blue screen, which then goes to pink or black and white lines, with a rainbow color spinning wheel in the top left corner of the screen)
Seriously stuck at this point and very discouraged, any help or thoughts would be amazing
Full hardware is as follows in case that helps:
Base Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T5550 (1.83 GHz, 667 MHz FSB, 2 MB L2 cache) – N-Series
Memory 2048MB 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [2x1024]
Video Card Integrated Intel® Graphic Media Accelerator X3100
Hard Drive 80GB (5400rpm) SATA Hard Drive
Modem Dell v92 Data/Fax Modem – UK
Optical Devices 8x DVD+/-RW Optical drive – N-Series
Wireless Networking Intel® Pro Wireless 3945 802.11a/b/g Mini-Card – Europe – Core 2 Duo Processors
LCD 15.4″ Wide Screen WXGA (1280 x 800) Display with TrueLife
For those trying to install from the retail DVD, I would ask that you communicate with Genaro as he has asked. If you MUST proceed on your own the key to getting past the screen issue on install is to include the VESA video drivers such as those found on the iPC install DVD. Your pretty much going to be on your own as I don’t have the time to hand hold anyone through this right now and Genaro is a busy man these days.
I used these Kext on the boot cd:
AppleDecrypt.kext, Disable.kext, IntelCPUPMDisabler.kext, SMBIOSEnabler.kext:
Needed for booting.
- IO80211Family.kext, IONetworkingFamily.kext:
Enable ethernet and wifi.
- IOGraphicsFamily.kext, IONDRVSupport.kext, IONVRAMFamily.kext
They force VESA allowing us to see the installation screen.
- IOUSBFamily.kext
- ACPIPS2Nub.kext ApplePS2Controller.kext:
Can be replaced with voodops2controller, if your so inclined.
I didn’t put this together for myself, but was the beneficiary of Genaro and one of his friends initial work, so the credit goes to them!!! I used Chameleon cdboot for the install and then boot-132 for the initial boot off my HD, you will need to fiddle around with this to find your own way. Get some CD-RWs as you may have to try a few different things to get it working. AGAIN, I recommend communicating with Genaro so that he can coordinate and provide some structure to the testing of the retail install, this will benefit the community in general, so please be patient.
One other thing, I don’t think the ‘Intel® Pro Wireless 3945 802.11a/b/g Mini-Card’ is supported with the kext available here. Your gonna have to search around for a solution to that in the usual places. Good Luck…
Cheers for the pointers, I’ve emailed Genaro
Ok with a special boot-132 from Genaro I was able to install Leopard 10.5.6 retail dvd, without having to muck around with the terminal (just a straight boot-swap-boot install).
Issues:
* Resolution always set to 1024×768, I have 1440×900
* Wired ethernet works but no support for the Wifi
* The computer seems slow and extremely hot, I’m guessing there are some issues here with full cpu support, like for dynamic cpu-stepping.
If I can address the resolution issue that would be a great start, as the app I want to run takes up more than the 768 height allows.
Once installed the system with the cdboot you need to install the kext normal computer. For now I think it makes much difference to retail installation to me.
Once installed the sitema install the Chameleon 2. After that, type in terminal:
sudo su
password
mkdir /Volumes/EFI
mount_hfs /dev/disk0s1 /Volumes/EFI
killall Finder
Now copy your kext’s to EFI/Extra/Extensions, in Finder.
I upgraded to 10.5.7. With this and the DSDT with the problem of video to solve.
Do not forget the DSDT.aml in the root of EFI in Extra and also in root of Macintosh HD. I do not know on what works, after hours of despair left in the three places.
The problem of temperature is resolved with VoodooPower.
If Pendrive is not working, install USBMassStorage.
Hi, I already have an Inspiron 1525 with working:
-Intel Core 2 Duo T5750/2.0Ghz
-Wireless: Dell Broadcom 1395
-Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X4500HD
-Sound
-Intel GMA X4500HD
-It doesn’t have a WebCam or BlueTooth module.
It has iPC 10.5.6 installed on it; upgraded to 10.5.7. ALL the features I need work already, however I’m getting a new Inspiron 1525 with:
-Intel® Core™ 2 Duo P8600
-256MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD4330
-Dell Wireless 1397 802.11g Half Mini-Card
-Dell Wireless 365 Bluetooth Internal (2.1)
-Integrated 1.3 MP Webcam
I’m pretty sure that the wireless card will work just fine, but I am unsure about the ATI Card, bluetooth and the webcam. Would all of those work with the iPC distribution?
There are still many issues for getting the retail version working 100% vanilla such as having to install modded USB kexts to get USB 2.0 and modded sound to get perfect audio. I’ve been working on it and I have yet to be able to find enough time to make a post on it.
I’m unaware about the mobility card, I know more research should be done to see but with a quick search I found myself over to this http://netkas.org/?p=104 I’m sorry I can’t much with the video card. To get the bluetooth it’ll take a bit of workaround but it’s possible with this post http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=136515&st=0&p=1187928entry1187928 and the webcam should just work.
If you need help editing the bluetooth kext ask here but I’m not too sure how fast I could get around to it.
Economy is hitting me hard, I have to go to work a lot more now. Work and school are pretty tough right now. The economy has hit me and my family quite hard which is one of the reasons I haven’t been able to offer as much support as I usually do.
Now have OSX 10.5.6 (retail) and Ubuntu 9.04 dualbooting with a nice Chameleon 2.0 frontend
Most things are working, with the exception of the Intel 3945 Wireless card, but from checking around the web its not currently possible to get that to work with secured wireless points.
genaro, i just got my inspiron 1525 and got osx 10.5.6 running perfectly thanks to you.. now i got another problem, my desktop has everything running well.. the only thing is that QUARTZ EXREME is not supported and because of that i cant run many of the apps li imovie…
video card is: ati radeon x1600 pro 512MB PCIe
any subjections?????
plz help
thank you
bueno, ahora tengo una pregunta…. cual S.O. mac leopard se puede instalar Kalyway o iAtkos.. en este momento me encuentro descargando iAtkos, y no me quiero equivocar
Hi,
I have been using iDeneb 10.5.7 on Dell Inspiron 1525 for a while now and everything seems to work. I wanted to try out Boot 132 and Retail Leopard on another HD to see if it would work. Unfortunately I dont have a retail leopard disc at the moment, so I downloaded 10.5.4 retail + 10.5.6 retail to test if it did work. Boot 132 generic.iso leaves me with a blank black screen after blue screen. I’m not sure how to modify the boot 132 so I wanted to know if anyone had a modified boot 132 for Dell Inspiron 1525 (or if one existed)
Errors are PCGENUSB on boot.
Any help would greatly appreciated, thanks.
Rob
Could you send me an email at gbonilla@mandomhood.com and I could get back to you with the boot-132 disc
Hi, I have a samsung n110, installed 10.5.5 and then have swapped the card to a dell 1397. I have searched high and low but have not been able to get clear instructions so far to install the wifi. Since dell 1525 has the same wifi card, i thought i can get some help here.
I would really appreciate any help i can get.
Thank you very mch in advance.
Try using the broadcom script located here http://macyourpc.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/broadcom-script.zip to run this open up terminal and drag and drop the script into terminal go through all the processes and then do it again. Make sure to do it twice to make sure it works. After that correct the permissions in disk utility.
i collected a lot of kexts for the boot 132 , is there any thing missing and can u give me a link for the one ( boot 132 ) that u have ( modified one )

@Heatgal:
Heatgal,
I could see that we have the same hardware configuration. I just want to ask what installation method did you use. If possible, please link me to some guides or tutorials. Thanks and have a nice day.
Hey there, I gotta say, you’re a genius by making up this website, thnx to this site, my hackbook has been greater than ever since I installed Snow Leopard with the guide you provided, I just remember when my hackbook had Leopard 10.5.5, well it was a pain in the ass to remove that sleep trick shit off my system, but now with Snow Leopard, this hackbook is flawless, thank you by opening this site.
i have installed snow using the boot 132 method, works fine till i try to update to 10.6.2
it just gets stuck, it goes as far as betting an apple logo (no loader)
any advice?

SO, WHAT SHOULD I DO. IT IS A DELL INSPIRON 1525 LAPTOP. ANY IDEA.??? PLEASE.
THANXX IN ADVANCE FOR ANY HELP
@hiddenhere:
you only used -f -v flags? try reading the instructions again (hint: -x). Not sure anything other than a real retail dvd will work, it’s $29 and money well spent. BTW: multiple all cap demands for help will not make you many friends here…
Thank you..
I have tried with -v -x flag also. but no success. I think this might be because of the OS x DVD i used. Can you please tell me a link that i could download full install mac os x DVD for free.
BTW: thank you for your advice…… i just could not control myself
@hiddenhere: I really would recommend that you purchase a real dvd, but I also know that searching for bit torrents will get you what you seek. ( not going to link it for obvious reasons, but the 6.13GB one with a lot of seeders is the real thing, wink wink )
Also, what is your bios version? You want to be at A16 or A17. You’ll need windows to install a bios update easily. With 10.6.3 on the way it may change everything or nothing, we’ll see once it’s out… Good luck!
@cuba09:
I also couldnt quite get my camera working (under 10.6.2), it didnt just work out of the box for somereason (it did in 10.5) . It would not show up in photobooth, but if I went to a flash website that used the camera it would show up, but 90% of the picture was solid green static, and I could only see a slight bit of the camera image. After lots of googling around and almost giving up, I read that it had something to do with osx trying to get a higher resolution from the camera than it was capable of. The fix was very simple, delete (or move) the file:
/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/CoreMediaIOServicesPrivate.framework/Versions/A/Resources/VDC.plugin
I found this out from here, where someone was trying to get their acer webcam working (check out post #13) :
http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=100897&hl=acer+webcam
I moved the file to my desktop and rebooted and the camera now works perfectly.
@Freeburma: I dont know much about bios version.. Can you please tell me how i can check my bios version? Thank you for the support.
@hiddenhere: it’s in BIG text when you power on your laptop. To install and maintain Mac OS on non-apple hardware requires the ability to search for (google) problems and find answers, you need to try to be self sufficient. I can see that this is heading down a road of endless questions and a dependence that I think is unrealistic. This will be my last post concerning your laptop. Sorry and good luck.
Okay….. we’ll seee
i have a problem
i have a black screen after apple splash when trying to install mac 10.6.2
