Dell Inspiron 1525 Hackintosh iPC Guide

**THIS GUIDE IS OUTDATED PLEASE REFER TO THE SNOW LEOPARD GUIDE**

So you just got your Dell Inspiron 1525 or you’ve had it for a while and can no longer suffer the equivalent of modern day water torture, otherwise known as vista. Don’t fret, Macintosh osx is here to save the day.

I’ll lay out the steps in the easiest way I can possibly make it so you guys can have the least amount of questions.

Edit: Benefits of using this driver pack.

  1. No Sleep Hack!
  2. Perfect Audio as well as Internal Mic
  3. Easy Power Management
  4. Ethernet Fix
  5. SD Card Reader fix

1) Get your copy of “iPC OSx86 10.5.6 Universal FINAL” onto a dvd. You should be able to find it at all the usual locations.

2) Once you have the dvd, pop it in your drive and boot from the disk. Once you get here go to “Tools” from the menu bar and choose “Disk Utility.” Once you’ve gotten into the Disk Utility you have to select your hard drive and click on the erase tab. From this tab choose “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” and name it Macintosh HD.

3) From here continue the installation and choose “Customize” Below I have provided a picture of the options you should select. After you selected those continue with the installation.

ipcppf5packagelist

4) Now that you’re done installing you can remove the disc and on the boot screen press “F8″ and type “-v -f” When the screen loads up it should just be a black screen, after this close the lid till you see the power light slowly “breathe” or pulse. When you open the lid you should be greeted with the Post-Install screen. Type all your info and stuff.

5) From here you’re going to need the 1525 Driver Pack. Everything in the pack has a readme.

Below is a quick video on how to do everything just in case you’re a bit lost. Keep in mind you probably won’t have sound to watch the video so you can either run it on another computer or watch it previous to installing osx.

**THE VIDEO IS OUTDATED**

All you have to do is kext helper everything and the dsdt.aml and everything should be good.

6) Now you can run all of your software updates and when you come back you wont have wi-fi, simply go into the misc folder and run the broadcom patch and you’ll be back in business.

7) Now you should have everything working. Stay tuned, I’ll have a post on how to get two-finger scrolling working 100% soon enough. Go here for the guide.

If you have any questions feel free to ask me about anything and I’ll be sure to reply as soon as possible!

  1. tcw1969: This might be a petty thing, but how do I change things so my laptop doesn’t say Dell when it starts up?Is this part of the BIOS, and is it changable?

It’s part of the BIOS so it isnt changeable, I would love for it to be though, I’m with you when it comes to beautifying heh.

Bobby: Thanks for the information on how to do this–I definitely want to try this out.I can only find a torrent named “iPC_OSx86_10_5_6_Universal_PPF5_Final.”Is this an acceptable substitute?I’m obviously new to Macs, but what does PPF5 mean? Thanks!

    That torrent would work fine.

Daniel T: I put the disk in my DVD drive then i boot into the DVD,
then I get Dawin boot thing. So I hit enter, then my pc loads lots of
kext files and stuff, then the screen turns blue, and then suddleny it just
turns black. I was waiting for ages. And I kept on restarting but
    the Same thing happens.
It’s something to do with my display, I don’t know if plugging it in to a external
display would do anything but is there any way of getting
to the installer without this black screen.

What release are you trying, also.. try to boot with -v -f flags so you can see what goes wrong if anything.

Try keeping your vista partition as active and use easybcd to add a mac option to the vista bootloader, tell me how that works.

I wouldn’t suggest updating to 10.5.8 as it has no big benefits and actually breaks a few things like sleep but I know over at http://www.dailyblogged.com they have a guide to update, I would suggest against updating. I haven’t made a guide on how to update because currently I don’t have the time to help everyone with the things it breaks. Work and I’m about to start school. Lists of changes in 10.5.8 by Apple, IMHO isn’t worth the risk of messing your Hackitosh when doing the upgrade. I downloaded and installed the latest Opera – which I think is superior to Safari by Apple. My Hackinstosh 10.5.6 worked great except for HDMI and card reader; I can live missing those 2 components. Sadly, currently the driver for the intel 3945 is still under developed and can only connect to networks without a password, below is a link to where you can find the driver for it and the discussion page on insanelymac forums.

There is another driver that is going to be finished in about 2 weeks that will most likely help a lot: http://projectcamphor.mercurysquad.com/

Alternatively you can replace your card with a dell mini 1390 card.

i have been missing around with the retail instillation with a lot of help of my friend Thomas ( daily blogged ) who gave me a modified version of boot 132 and the kexts needed after the instillation

they only thing that i don’t like is that till now i don’t know a proper way to make a modified one in my own ( i used slimbuild GUI , i tried to modified exiting one , and i even try to build one from scratch , i failed three times lol )

I don’t think anyone has had any luck using boot-132 disks for snow leopard so till that gets figured out we’re going to have to settle with usb installations. Slimbuild GUI has never worked for me which is a shame because it makes it so much easier. Can you attempt to install it again? sometimes it just doesnt happen, in addition to this have you tried unplugging the power? again if all of this doesnt work you should be able to boot with either -s or -x and it should come up, -s is safe mode and it will bypass having to make an account which you can do later. -x should force you into vesa mode which should take you to the main screen.

    Good luck!

This was just a test install on a blank hard drive that was initially attached to the laptop via USB as a removable drive since the Snow leopard installation was done through the current Leopard on top of the removable drive. After installing and few minor adjustments I’ve removed the internal hard drive, inserted the Snow Leopard drive and booed the OS (32bit mode only).
I’ve played a while with it and then restored my old (and working flawlessly) Leopard 10.5.8 drive. I will wait a while for better install process and maybe 64bit drivers :)

I’ve come upon a better method, I made my boot-132 disk and it is fully functional all I need to do now is optimize the install. I’m currently working on patching the dsdt.aml to have audio injection built in and I’m working on porting over our AppeHDA.kext to the new Snow Leopard kext. However, I’m not too sure the practicality of waiting to run in 64-bit mode? 64-bit mode was designed to handle over 30 gigs of ram, that’s about it, in 32-bit mode you can still run 64-bit applications so we’re all good :)

Just a quick note – I too have been running SL on a fresh install (USB external) & from my observations wifi works, ethernet works, sound works (clear), SDHC works, touchpad & KB with the Voodoo kext though it conflicted at first with ApplePS2. No mic, no sleep + deep sleep.

On first boot I got a KP while logged in within the first minute (mdworker) though this was resolved fairly quickly by booting into safe mode (-x) & runnning ‘kext utility’ then rebooting back into 32 bit.

As for the graphics it’s my understanding that the kext is only for 32 bit & has not been ported (yet) for 64 bit so if you boot using -x64 you will only get the 1024 x 768 resolution.

  58. My boot-132 disk is working but is still problematic, I still haven’t written any guide on it or anything. I will clean up the disk and have it up by friday afternoon. I currently do not have too much time to answer questions about the boot disc and such so I’d rather release it with some documentation. I have not had any kernel panics with my current setup but I have yet to test it too extensively.

Why Soo Serious did you install and video kexts or do you have a special resolution other than the 1200×800?

You can boot with “-v -x” but I would suggest following my latest guide.

    Hey Genaro,
Just wanted to say thanks for this guide. I had been running iAtkos v1.0i and while it worked ok, I wasn’t 100% happy. I was following another guide to switch to a vanilla kernel so I could run software updates and was testing that out when it nuked my system. I found your guide and after a couple of failed attempts I was finally able to install iPC 10.5.6 and have things work the way I expected them to work. So thanks for that!!

Now the only issue I have is that when I select shut down, I get a message that tells me:
“You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button.”

Thanks again for all your hard work!

I just installed ipcOSx86 on my inspiron 1525. I do not have any sound coming out of my laptop. I’m a new mac user. I found the 1525 drivers on this website and was trying to install them. One of the steps in updating the drivers was to use kext helper b7. I followed the instructions but the computer keeps telling me that the files couldn’t be installed because the password was not recognized. I never entered any password during the setup of the OS. Is there a way for me to get the password reseted or just have the audio come back on.

    thanks!

Well I have just tried to do a new clean install with iPC and it boots up, I hit F8 and do a -V -F for the install. Everything seems to be going fine but then a few minutes later the screen goes blank and then the dvd drive stops. So I plugged in an external display and did the Fn + F8 to switch dislpay and then I could see what was going on. Here are the last 4 lines of what was on the screen.

localhost mDNSResponder[48]; MDNSKeychainGetSecrets: Could not copy keychain default
localhost mDNSResponder[48]; SetDomainSecrets: mDNSKeychainGetSecrets failed error 2313 CFArrayRef 00000000
localhost mDNSResponder[48]; Couldn’t read user-specified Computer Name; using default bDevice-00000000000b instead
localhost mDNSResponder[48]; Couldn’t read user-specified local hostname; using default bDevice-000000000000.localb instead

Also I have tried disableing most the the options in the BIOS but that didnt seem to help. Also running BIOS A16.

    Thanks,
    Jake

Ok, not sure why but for some reason I can do the install by tricking my laptop. Here is what I did.

    1. Laptop boots normal, I hit F8 when I see the prompt on my laptop display.
    2. Hit the FN + F8 (moves display to external LCD monitor
    3. Type -v then Enter to start the install. It does its thing on the external dislpay and when it gets to the blue screen it then switches my display back to my laptop screen. I then get the osx background, a few seconds later the welcome screen.

    Going through the install now.

Anyone have any ideas why this is happening?

@Kocco: I’m having the same problem with the webcam and sleep, it won’t even sleep if I have it plugged in also, as far as ctrl c and v, it’s alt on mac because the alt key is the command key’s counterpart, you can change it in your system preferences if you’d rather it be control.

    Hello

Thanks so much for this guide – I’ve got OS X 10.5.7 running almost perfectly! I say almost because I can’t get sleep to work. I’ve tried the sleep fix, I’ve tried modifying the hibernate mode following a link I found in the comments of your Common Problems post… I can’t figure it out.

When I close the lid, my laptop (Dell Inspiron 1525) reboots. If I choose Sleep from the Apple menu, my laptop reboots.

The closest I came was when I switched to hibernate mode 1 – the system appeared to go to sleep, but I could still hear the fan running inside. I’m afraid that if I were to leave my laptop in such a state (say, if I went to work) it would overheat while I was away. On top of that, when the laptop ‘woke up’, all open programs had been closed.

All other hibernate modes other than mode 1 result in the laptop rebooting.

I’d really appreciate it if someone could help. Thanks!

I plugged it in, went to system preferences, and click mirror. When I did this, all i saw was a bunch of colors. Now when i connect it and hit search for displays, it defaults to mirror and shows all colors. Help please!!

    Hi There,

I have followed each and every step of this tutorial (for iPC 10.5.6) but still i am unsuccessful in running MAC OSX. After installation and on first bootup the screen is staying black. Tried waiting patiently so many times but with not luck. After every boot using -v -f (-v by itself, -v -x also) after some messages the blue screen comes then the bloddy hell the BLACK screen. Tried removing power cord closing lid and waiting till the laptop goes to sleep (approx 15-20 min) and then finally opening the lid still the screen staying black. Never seen the Mac OSX desktop on my Dell Inspiron 1525. About my system: 3 drive partitions, one having XP, installed Mac OSX on the second one and third is for storing stuff. Just want to know that do i have to install Mac OSX first then Win Xp as i am doing opposite. I already has Win XP on my dell. Dell configuration:

IntelCore2Duo T8300 @ 2.4 GHz, Intel GM965 chipset, X3100 display card, Ethernet Marvell Yukon, Wireless Intel Pro 3945 (i think), Sigmatel HD Audio Codec.

Any help would be appreciated. Is there any specific Custom Options to choose upon installtion????

    Please help :-(
